Meteorological devices containing a large quantity of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was forced to close for an extended period when multiple of them drifted across the national airspace.
Aviation Problems
The operational halt led to the cancellation of 30 flights disrupting thousands of passengers, with officials warning that delays might continue throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Border security stated that 25 meteorological balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with two of which ending up precisely above the airport's airspace.
As many as 14 of the meteorological devices deployed throughout the weekend drifted across the Vilnius area, which is home to Lithuania's capital city and adjacent to the border with Belarus.
Illegal Goods Seizure
At least 11 balloons carrying numerous containers of contraband smoking materials have since been recovered, though additional discoveries are expected, according to border security officials.
Cross-Border Contraband Trend
While creating issues, representatives clarified that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - cigarettes from Belarus - are not unusual in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
Since January, over five hundred weather devices have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been recorded last year.
Neighboring Country Impact
Simultaneously, the border area of Poland, which also borders Belarus, has registered in excess of numerous instances in which smuggled items were delivered from its border nation utilizing the meteorological equipment.
Smuggling Techniques
When questioned about why criminal organizations employ a technique that proves particularly vulnerable to weather elements rather than more controllable drones, authorities explained that "Weather devices are basic instruments used by smugglers - they are less expensive than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Representatives further stated that "Our services' aim is to capture the greatest possible quantities of contraband and to arrest masterminds and participants so that such operations become not financially viable and create minimal risk to civil aviation."
International Concerns
Such border infiltrations occur during a period of growing anxiety in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have caused air traffic disruption across the continent.
Similar occurrences in neighboring countries have prompted European leaders to accelerate discussions about enhancing aerial security throughout European airspace.
